The 1012 is made to function well in home and small office environments. Here are some things you may wish to consider.
Before you install the 1012 software, remove the printer from the box. Plug it in so your computer can see new hardware. Exit all other programs. Make sure to temporarily exit firewall programs. This will make installation easier.
You will be able to print up to fifteen pages per minute. This is in black and white. You may need to print items for temporary use. The 1012 has a toner saving mode. It will change the resolution form 1,200 dpi to 600 dpi. It will print a little lighter, to conserve toner. If you want clearer images, there is a toner saver setting for 1,200 dpi. This will enhance images, while keeping toner usage to a minimum.
The 1012 communicates with your computer through a standard USB cable. It does not print on its own. The toner price is about equal to most models. You can use a number of operating systems with it. It will work with Windows 98 through Windows Vista. Mac operating systems will also work. It will utilize any Mac operating system above 9.1. The printer is also an Energy Star compliant model. This is will allow for minimum electricity usage.
The print tray will hold 160 sheets. You can print many sizes with this model. It handles Legal, Executive, Letter A, A5 and B5. It will also print envelopes, cards, and labels. You can print transparencies with it also. The printing comes out clear by means of image enhancement technology. The three status lights are easy to see on the front of the printer. The printer is not made for heavy usage. However, it handles medium jobs well. It will do a good job for home and small business needs. You cannot upgrade the 133 MHZ processor. The 8 MB of RAM is not upgradable either. It does, however, have a security feature. Make your documents more secure by printing watermarks on them. You can also print up to sixteen thumbnail images per page with the N-up feature.
You may have the need to print on both sides of the media. Do you print booklets? The 1012 will do a good job. You will have onscreen instructions, showing you exactly how to do the job. This will keep you from inserting media the wrong way.
